Aug. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Among NAMI's Advocate e-newsletter recent book recommendations is  Vancouver mother Susan Inman's memoir, After Her Brain Broke, Helping My Daughter Recover Her Sanity. Released in the early Spring, the book has been receiving excellent reviews from diverse sources. Dr. E Fuller Torrey, a former adviser to NAMI and author of Surviving Schizophrenia stated that  "this is one of the best accounts I have read of serious mental illness as told by a mother." and "Highly  recommended"

Book review site, Blog Critics, stated that, "After Her Brain Broke serves as a manual for consumers of mental health services and their families."

Victoria Maxwell,  well known play write, educator and speaker on the lived experience of mental illness, named this as her book of the month in her June/July newsletter and said "this book provides a sanctuary of relief and profound validation."

Well known Canadian columnist Rafe Mair writes in the online journal The Tyee that, "Sad and often tragic that the book is, one always gets the feeling of optimism....It's a book I urge you to read."

The Canadian Medical Association Journal in a recent review  called the book "well written, moving without being sentimental, informative without being pedantic". The reviewer, Dr. Ellen Wiebe, recommends it for both physicians and family members of patients and writes that she wishes she had Susan's book when a member of her own family became mentally ill.
