Aug. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- For 2011 the BMW X6 gets a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the six-speed automatic, as well as a new brake regeneration system to both the 35i and 50i trims. The more popular of the two, the xDrive35i, gets released with an engine upgrade as well, and now runs on a single-turbo 3.0L inline six-cylinder, which replaces the "old-faithful" twin-turbo. BMW is tapping into a technology normally only found in hybrids, the new regenerative braking system, which smartly only charges the battery when the car is braking, coasting or decelerating, improving the fuel economy by up to 3 percent.

The xDrive35i uses a new 3.0L inline-six-cylinder with one turbocharger, while the xDrive50i, which is keeping the same engine from 2010, uses a 4.4L V8 with two turbochargers. Power ratings are unchanged on the new engine, but BMW says it is still more efficient than before. Both engines promise minimal turbo lag and a flat torque curve that begins under two thousand rpm's.

The xDrive50i has upgraded it's brakes with aluminum calipers, and BMW's Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) coordinates the Dynamic Performance Control differential with stability and traction control systems to optimize the X6's stability and performance capabilities.

BMW's ActiveHybrid X6 comes with 20-inch wheels, a borrowed navigation system from the xDrive50i, comfortable 20-way adjustable seats, four-zone automatic climate control, a self-leveling suspension system, a 16-speaker high-performance stereo, an iPod adapter, 3-stage heated front seats, keyless entry and a rearview camera in addition to the high-efficiency powertrain.

The X6 M doesn't hide its power, and why should it? It's a head turner for sure, running on a beast of a 4.4L turbo-charged V8 engine which couples ever so smoothly with the 6-speed automatic transmission. Especially with those huge air intakes in the front bumper which are used for cooling the brakes, water-cooled turbo intercoolers as well as that massively powerful "M" engine -- who wouldn't want to turn heads? The X6 M also features unique 20-inch wheels, front fender vents, a set of quad tailpipes and a rear diffuser. It's side skirts aren't black, but are instead painted to match the chosen body color. In addition to it's new geometry, the M's suspension lowers the body of the X6 by almost a half an inch. BMW has also tweaked the stability system as well as the all-wheel drive system to maximize overall performance and to shift torque to the rear when it needs it. This feature is complimented by a nifty display that can be found on the instrument panel, which shows you exactly how much power is going to each wheel. The brakes are also beefed up a bit with the addition of larger discs and calipers.
