Nobody can deny the fact that the Cayenne did well, and still is, as much as the angry speed racers want to. However, here's something even they might enjoy-- the 2011 Porsche Cayenne has shed some pounds, 408 of them, to be exact! Roughly 70 pounds goes out the window thanks to the switch from the previous 2-speed transfer case to the new eight-speed automatic with a lower first-gear ratio with superior traction control as well as an additional 65 pounds which were eliminated from other engine and powertrain systems. Adding more aluminum to the chassis found another 72 pounds, new and lighter wheels and tires saved 17 pounds, a new electric parking brake saved 13 pounds and re-structuring saved 42 more. The body surrendered around 86 pounds after the doors were redesigned, the interior lightened up 42 pounds, electrical components gave up 22 pounds, making both the body and structuring more efficient eliminated a final 42 pounds. After all the hard work that went into reducing the Cayenne's weight Porsche had to add on additional content and reinforcement to meet legal requirements. All in all The front end was lowered, the corners were tapered, the shoulders were broadened, the surfacing is tauter, there's plenty of added contouring and a tailgate with a dramatic tilt forward, and amidst all the weight reduction and style changes the Cayenne came out longer, wider and taller than the original. In spite of all these weight reductions, overall structural stiffness was increased by 15 percent. Coming out ahead of the game while having to add content shows the automotive industry that no matter what the gurus are whining about, Porsche really knows what they're doing.
