ST IVES ARCHIVE MARK NEW ERA WITH DEPUTY MAYOR

St.Ives Archive is holding an open day on Wednesday 8th September to celebrate the launch of its new independent charity status and to invite the town to find out more about its work, officiated by the Deputy Mayor.

Set up under the umbrella of The St.Ives Trust in 1996, the Archive Centre has flourished and become a much loved asset to the town, safely storing and making accessible photos and files on the buildings, events and festivals, legends and folklore, mining and archaeology, wartime and evacuees, music and composers, organisations, shipping, writers and poets.

With the strap-line “Taking Care Of Your Heritage”, St.Ives Archive is now an independent charity in its own right and will continue to maintain an archive centre to provide education, facilitate research and house information on everything pertaining to St. Ives and its history, whilst also continuing its valuable services to the public.

The Deputy Mayor of St.Ives, Joan Tanner said, “St.Ives Archive have worked really hard over the last six months to establish their own independent charity status to safeguard its valuable work.  The volunteers at the centre give their time for the good of the town, and as a council with a mission statement of “Cherishing the past – working for the present – looking to the future”, the Archive Centre’s contribution to the town, its history and its future is invaluable.”

Starting at 10.30am the annual open day will be free to enter and will give others an opportunity to learn about the services and information that St.Ives Archive provides.

The theme this year is St Ives local customs, events, old societies and celebrations with a continuous visual display of St Ives and the surrounding area, as well as light refreshments, books, calendars, greeting cards and raffle tickets for sale.

St.Ives Archive hopes to build on the success of similar events held over the past years by encouraging visitors to share their experiences and memories of life in St.Ives area and their own recollections of celebrations in the town.

It will take place in The Lower Parish Room, St Andrew’s Street, St Ives and will be open between 10.30am until 3.00pm.  Entry to the open day is free.

Donations to help support the Centre’s valuable work are always welcome, as are new members and volunteers.

For further information about the open day or if you are interested in becoming a member or volunteer, please email Sue Taylor at administrator@stivestrust.co.uk or phone on 01736 796408.
