The Game That Makes You Smarter

Pick up the game that will make you smarter and will improve your cognitive abilities more that you could imagine.

Aug. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- Would you be interested in a game that makes you smarter? How about a game that has been proven to increase your cognitive abilities and problem solving skills? Then you should look into one of the oldest games in the world, Chess.
Many great minds have become fascinated by this game; multimillionaires Bill Gates and Paul Allen, Artists Salvador Dali and Frank Sinatra, and Nobel Prize winners Albert Einstein and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, are just but a few avid chess players.

A research study in Texas found  that elementary students who participated in a school chess club, experienced twice the improvement of non-chess players in reading and mathematics on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills. [James Liptrap, ``Chess and Standardized Test Scores,'' Chess Coach Newsletter, Spring 1999, Volume 11 (1), pp. 5 & 7.]

Incredibly in a 1974-1976 Belgium study, a group of fifth graders that played chess experienced a statistically significant gain in cognitive development over a control group. Measured by Piaget's tests for cognitive development. The study also showed, students did significantly better in their regular school testing, [Johan Christiaen, ``Chess and Cognitive Development,'' doctoral dissertation, 1976, Trans. Stanley Epstein]. Not only can chess improve reading and math skills, but also regular grades.

As Benjamin Franklin once said:

"Chess teaches foresight, by having to plan ahead; vigilance, by having to keep watch over the whole chess board; caution, by having to restrain ourselves from making hasty moves; and finally, we learn from chess the greatest maxim in life - that even when everything seems to be going badly for us we should not lose heart, but always hoping for a change for the better, steadfastly continue searching for the solutions to our problems."

Does chess make you smarter? Research would suggest it does, as it improves memory, problem solving skills, math skills, and much more. In reality, all games that stimulate the mind positively will make you “smarter”. Because in order to develop the brain properly we need to stimulate it, and give it a good workout.

Even with all these benefits let's not forget that chess is still a game, and as such, it is very fun and entertaining to play. A new website based in Miami, FL called deluxechessboards.com is trying to encourage parents to teach their children to play chess at an early age, as a way to improve their learning, memory and cognitive skills while having fun.

We would advice everyone to get a board, and start a game with your family or your best friends, it will be a great way to get smarter and have fun while doing it.
