Aug. 25, 2010 - PRLog -- The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (Mark Harvey, Director) joins forces with cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum, a rising star of the international avant-garde, to open the band’s 38th season with Spoke-a-Phonic, the Boston spoke of Bynum’s Acoustic Bicycle Tour, a 2-week, carbon-neutral tour of 6 New England states. The show will include Bynum's Choices, a concerto for trumpet & jazz orchestra with Mark Harvey on trumpet, plus the premieres of 2 works by Harvey: Constant Contact and Vuvuzela Nightmare.

Cornetist/composerTaylor Ho Bynum’s expansive resume includes collaborations with both his contemporaries and legendary figures alike, most notably the iconic saxophonist/composer Anthony Braxton, with whom he has performed and recorded extensively over the past decade. Bynum’s most recent releases as a leader/co-leader include Tomas Fujiwara & Taylor Ho Bynum’s Stepwise (NotTwo Records), Taylor Ho Bynum & SpiderMonkey Strings’ Madeleine Dreams (Firehouse 12 Records), Positive Catastrophe’s Garabatos Volume One (Cuneiform Records), The Thirteenth Assembly’s (un)sentimental (Important Records), and the Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet’s Asphalt Flowers Forking Paths. He is also a member of such groups as The Open Circuit International Trumpet Ensemble, Myra Melford’s Happy Whistlings, The Convergence Quartet, Jason Kao Hwang’s Edge, the Joe Morris Bass Quartet and the large ensembles of Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor. Critics have called Bynum "a young brass master and compelling composer" (Jon Garelick, Boston Phoenix), "a remarkable writer, improviser and bandleader" (Troy Collins, AllAboutJazz.com) and "one of the most exciting figures in jazz's new power generation" (Steve Dollar, Time Out Chicago). The Chicago Reader's Peter Margasak writes, "Taylor Ho Bynum cemented his reputation as one of the most compelling and progressive trumpeters and bandleaders currently active, at home in every corner of the creative-music map."

Founded in 1973, the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra is known for its eclectic and exhilarating concerts spanning the jazz and American music spectrum.  The band specializes in original exploratory works by founder and music director Mark Harvey, together with wide-ranging repertory including Ellingtonia; American music by such composers as Ives, Gottschalk, and Billings; spiritual music in the jazz tradition; and performances with film, dance and poetry, as well as symphonic and choral ensembles.  Winner of the 2000 Independent Music Awards, Aardvark has premiered more than 120 works for jazz orchestra and has released 10 CDs including 5 discs on the prestigious Leo Records label.  Jazz Review (UK) touted Aardvark's "imagination, exuberance and sheer brio," while Jazz Improv praised “an unapologetic creative edge…all the soloists play with passion and conviction.” The band's latest CD, American Agonistes (Leo Records) has been called "a stunning hour of music that is, in turn, beautiful, poignant and raucous" (billboard.com).  

Mark Harvey has performed as trumpeter in the U.S., Mexico and Europe; has recorded with George Russell (Blue Note) and Baird Hersey (Arista/Novus); and performed with Gil Evans, Claudio Roditi, Howard McGhee, Sam Rivers, and others.  An internationally acclaimed composer with over 120 works in his catalogue, he has received awards and commissions from ASCAP, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the 15th Annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert, the Organization of American Kodaly Educators, and Meet-the-Composer-Lila Wallace/Reader’s Digest Commissioning Program, among others.  An ordained Methodist minister, Dr. Harvey has given lectures and workshops on music, religion, and culture throughout the United States and in Europe.   He teaches jazz studies at MIT.
