Aug. 23, 2010 - PRLog -- Thunder Horse is located in the south central part of the prolific Missisippi Canyon (MC) block of Gulf of Mexico, US. The field is located 156 miles southeast of New Orleans or approximately 69 miles from the Louisiana coastline. Thunder Horse is ultra deepwater oil and gas field located in water depth of 6050 feet. The field consists of two main structures known as Thunder Horse Main and Thunder Horse North. The field is located in MC blocks 775,776,777,778,821,822.

The field is producing by a production, drilling and quarters (PDQ) facility called Thunder Horse PDQ located in MC block 778. The platform has the capacity to process 250,000 barrels of oil and 200 million cubic feet of gas per day.

Thunder Horse is operated by BP plc which is also the major owner (75%) of the field and rest is owned by ExxonMobil (25%). The discovery was made in 1999 but commercial oil production was started in June 2008.

Crude Oil produced from Thunder horse is of medium gravity, low sulphur with an API of about 34.5 and the sulphur content is about 0.62 wt%.

Thunder Horse produced 68.30 million barrels of crude oil and 57501.2 million cubic feet of gas during 2009. The owners of the field are planning to expand the capacity in two development phases within next 10-12 year.

The field (or mine) life of Thunder Horse is expected to be around 25-30 years with abandonment to start during 2036 without Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) or 2033 with EOR. The field is expected to generate $111.38 billion without EOR or $111.57 billion with EOR in revenues (undiscounted) during its remaining life (starting 1/1/2010) and is expected to yield an IRR of around 18.43% without EOR or 18.46% with EOR.
