Butterfly Painting Workshop – 9 Million Choices - with Mindy Lighthipe October 19-21, 2010

3 day Painting workshop sponsored by the Florida Museum of Natural History features Mindy Lighthipe, Botanical Artist and Natural Science Illustrator. The workshop is for all artists who want an up close and personal behind the scenes experience.

The McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity  is hosting a 3 day butterfly painting workshop, October 19-21, 2010 with award winning artist Mindy Lighthipe in conjunction with ButterflyFest 2010. ( http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/butterflyfest/workshops.htm ) This is a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes, draw and paint from McGuire's collection of 9 million specimens. Participants will learn to accurately depict the butterfly through drawing and painting demonstrations, lectures on anatomy, butterfly behavior and lifecycle. Ms. Lighthipe is known for her natural science illustrations that depict the lifecycle and dependency of insects and plants.

The McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity is located within the Florida Museum of Natural History and includes the living Butterfly Rainforest and exhibit space that features information about Lepidoptera and rainforests worldwide. The Butterfly Rainforest is a 6,400 square foot living exhibit that contains 60 to 80 species at any one given time.The live butterflies come in the chrysalis stage from farms in the Philippines, Malaysia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Suriname, Ecuador, Belize and Florida.The center houses the Florida Museum Lepidoptera collections,comprised of over 9 million specimens, making it the world's second-largest Lepidoptera collection.
      
Mindy Lighthipe is the author/illustrator of Mother Monarch from Schiffer Publishers. Mindy is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. In 2009 she  achieved a silver medal from the Royal Horticultural Society for her series of Botanical & Natural Science paintings of plants and insects. Her work is in private and corporate collections in the USA, Europe and Central America. Her work can be seen at http://www.MindyLighthipe.com

The cost of the workshop is $327.00 and includes entrance fees to the Butterfly Rainforest, behind the scenes tour, use of specimens and instructor fee.
Enrollment is limited to 15 participants. Beginner to advanced artists welcome.
