Aug. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- Online retail specialists JHHC LLC announced an aggressive move into a new market today with the launch of their new website ThorsCBradio.com, the company's third online retail store.

CB radio was at its peak in the mid-to-late 1970s when it became a cultural phenomenon. Songs like ‘Convoy’, movies like ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ and TV series such as the ‘Dukes of Hazard’ meant that CB radio was forever in the public eye. However, as the airwaves became more crowded, the popularity of CB radio began to wane.  ' These days it's difficult to find a national retailer who stocks CB radios.' says company President, Jeff Harkins and that is one of the reasons behind the company’s move into the CB radio market.

But CB radio is making a comeback. Modern technology, in particular the adoption of bluetooth by many CB manufacturers, allows users to make and receive cellphone calls on a bluetooth enabled CB radio. The units have a relatively low price point, and unlike amateur radio, no license is required. The general public may no longer use the Citizens Band, but a growing number of enthusiasts have embraced the technology for many different reasons, varying from travel to the simple enjoyment of an absorbing hobby.
The major difference between radio and cellphone is that radio allows the sender to contact anyone within range, there is no need to know a number. For this reason it is still the only way to make contact on long journeys when you are looking for information about road and weather conditions ahead. ‘Mobile CB radios are simple to use and easy to install’ says Harkins ‘and can be invaluable in cases of emergency.’ State troopers, as well as highway patrol vehicles usually monitor CB's channel 9 which is used to call for help in case of an emergency.

Emergency readiness is another reason for the popularity of CB radio. Cellphone towers are dependent on power supply, so the cellular network is likely to be unavailable in the case of a major weather event or other natural disaster such as a flood or hurricane with associated power outages.  CB radio uses little power and can be operated by a car battery for an extended period of time, and most CB radios have an added feature, they receive storms and extreme weather bulletins from the weather service.

‘Our aim’, says Harkins ’is to make sure these items are available at a national level and to provide the service once available through national retailers. CB radio is nothing short of a lifeline to many people. For those travelling to remote parts of the country it is essential and regularly saves lives.’ The new web store will specialize in cb radio, 10 Meter Radio and Handheld CB Radio models.

CB radio sets come in many forms, from mobile sets designed to be fitted to cars and trucks to the larger CB base stations designed to be installed at home. There are also handheld CB radios, which can be used both in vehicle and when traveling on foot. Mobile and handheld CB radios are especially useful for hikers, campers, hunters, mountain climbers, photographers and others who venture into the more remote regions of the USA. The new website will provide CB base stations, mobile and hand held models as well as antennas and the more powerful 10 Meter Radio.
