Palermo – A Buzzing Nightlife?

Has the historic city of Palermo been tragically overlooked as a holidaymakers destination, despite not only its culture and tradition but its stimulating and very active nightlife scene?

Aug. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Palermo is the historic city in the southern region of Italy; it is the biggest Italian city in Sicily and the capital of the region and the province of Palermo.  The municipality has 687.855 inhabitants and an area of 15.888 hectares for a density population of 4.329 inhabitants per square kilometre.  It rises on a flat area and is 31 metres above sea-level.  The city has beautiful structures including some of the best villas in Italy.

It was founded by Phoenicians under the name of Ziz, it means flower, and later the Greeks called it Panormos which means all port.  It had reached a golden age during the Arab domination when it became one of the most prosperous cities in the Mediterranean and Europe, known as city of delights for its marvellous lavish gardens, as well as for magnificent mosques and palaces.  But after being conquered by the Normans most of the palaces, mosques were destroyed.  The new rulers of Palermo changed it to look like a cosmopolitan environment from different cultural roots giving the birth to a unique architectural style which they dubbed 'Arab-Norman Style of Sicily' which was a blend of Arab styled decorations, Roman architecture and Byzantine mosaics.

Surprisingly Palermo isn't like Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan and, to some extent, Naples, as it doesn't rank among the must-see-cities of Italy.  But don't let that put you off as there are a variety of monuments, witnessing its long and rich history such as the cathedral which is a Catalan influenced honey coloured building, it is characterised by the presence of different styles due to a long history of additions, alterations and restorations which last occurred in the 18th century. There is Quattro Canti is a small square at the crossing of the ancient main roads dividing the town into its quarters.  It was laid out on the orders of the Viceroy the Duke of Maqueda between 1608-1620 by Giulio Lasso at the crossing of the two principal streets in Palermo, the Via Maqueda and the Corso Vittorio Emanuele.  The Palazzo dei Normanni is a palace that contains the Cappella Palatina which is a royal chapel and the best example of the so-called Arab-Norman-Byzantine style.

Recently Palermo has been all about the night life, this is partly thanks to the enhancement of the historic centre that has become the main focal point night city.  The Champagneria is a large semi pedestrian area located between via and via Spinuzza Clock.  It is one of the places that is suited for people of all ages and has a massive club presence.  The Kalsa is a historic district that boomed at the end of the 90's.  At that time a resurgence of clubs, bars, pubs and restaurants spread throughout the district and lastly The Vuccirìa is a place where at day has a market but at night is a popular night spot here you can listen to music that ranges from Reggae, Rap music to Pop and Electro.
