Aug. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- The National Disaster Management Authority of Pakistan (NDMA) reports that as many as 12 million people have been affected by the worst flooding in Pakistan’s history. The Government of Pakistan estimates that one million people have been displaced. Both NDMA and the United Nations also report that at least 1,600 people have died; more than half of those deaths in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (KPK) alone. The NDMA says about 700,000 homes are believed to have been damaged or destroyed across Pakistan.

SOS Children's Villages in Pakistan ready to take in unaccompanied children

All children, staff and facilities of SOS Children's Villages in Pakistan are safe after the devastating floods in the region. SOS - Pakistan has offered its assistance to the government with a focus on providing temporary shelter to unaccompanied children.

In addition to the eight SOS Children's Villages in the country (another four are under construction), SOS Children's Villages Pakistan operates numerous other social programs and cares for orphaned and abandoned children in many of the affected areas. SOS is monitoring the developing situation carefully and is ready to help children who have lost contact with their families.

SOS Children's Villages has a strong history of providing emergency relief for disaster areas. In 2005, after the Kashmir earthquake, SOS launched an emergency relief program to provide immediate aid to children and families across the affected area and admitted several orphaned children to nearby SOS Villages for the long-term.  In Haiti, SOS continues to provide temporary shelter, food distribution services, and open schools to orphaned children and local communities affected by the January earthquakes.

You can help support emergency relief programs in Pakistan and around the world. Make a donation to SOS Children’s Villages today to help to children who have lost everything.
