Take What You Can Get!

Don't hold out too long for the perfect job. Remember the old adage, "a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush."

Aug. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Believing you deserve the best is a healthy attitude to maintain.  If you hold out for the best, good things will come your way, right?  Unfortunately, over the past few years many job seekers would argue otherwise.  Your great attitude and determination to land a high paying, challenging career diminishes over time when you face rejection over and over.  So do you keep believing the best is just around the corner, or do you settle for something less just to get out of the ranks of the unemployed?

With unemployment still hovering over 9%, your best bet is to put your ego aside and take what comes along, particularly if you have been out of work for several months or longer.  Although you may have a difficult time seeing that a job far below your pay level and experience can be a good move, there are some very good reasons not to turn down any job offers.

*   Income-  It’s rare to find an individual who can live off their savings for 6 months or  more.  Furthermore, unemployment is often not nearly enough to pay all the bills, so just having some income will ease the financial pressure and hopefully keep you from making drastic choices like emptying out your 401K.

*   Fill resume gaps- Although hiring managers are a bit more understanding about those gaps lately, the question will still come up in interviews.  Gaps tend to raise red flags, so keep them as small as possible.

*   Opportunities - You never know what may come of a new job, no matter how menial it may seem.  Use it as a learning experience to gain knowledge of a new industry or new skills.  More importantly, it can be a great networking tool.  You never know who you may meet along the way!

*   Preserve your sanity- Being out of work for an extended time can leave you feeling insecure and embarrassed, in addition to putting tremendous strain on family and marriages.  Getting out of the house, and earning even a small paycheck can do wonders for your mental health.
