Eroding Land in Costa Rica is Common But What Can You Do About it?

Concrete foundations is not something many Costa Ricans worry about, however this does not mean they shouldn't be.

Aug. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- Every year in Costa Rica the rainfall is measured in meters and the range is drastic lying between 6m (18 feet) and 1.5m (4 feet). The point is, it rains plenty in Costa Rica for many months of the year.

All this rainfall can induce landslides and severe erosion. The current "status quo" when it comes to foundations in Costa Rica is a system called the floating foundation. Floating foundations are built on the surface of the soil with very little penetration in to the earth below. This is a system that is very effective for earthquake prone areas. The problem with this system of foundations for homes, is the fact that when the earth moves, and it will, the softer strata near the surface, will liquify to an extent depending on the size of the tremor. When the land softens, it begins to move. Whether it sinks or slides, it's going to move.

With Ram Jacks helical (screw) system of securing a foundation, the screws are drilled until a predetermined pressure ratio is met. This will determine the weight capacity of the foundation itself. The most important fact is that the helicals (screws) are applied to strata far stronger than what is achievable on or near the surface.

The Ram Jack system is also, and mainly, used to "lift" properties and foundations that have already slid or sank. Ranked throughout the world as the #1 solution for foundation repair, the Ram Jack system of helicals is proven and guaranteed to ensure your home's security in times when you need it most.

It is true that many  believe the system to be expensive, however once you look a little closer, you begin to see that although immediate costs might be slightly higher, the future costs you may face could be through the roof!

For example, a new standard size 2-level home might require fourteen columns done the traditional way here in Costa Rica, yet with the Ram Jack system, this same home could be built using only four or five helicals (screws). In this case the savings are observed immediately.

As development in Costa Rica increases, so do the cases of improperly built homes, sliding or sinking in to the soft earth that is so common in the country. Sure a floating foundation might be just fine for a smaller "Tico style" home however these systems are not going to bode well for larger homes with pools and guest house etc. Almost weekly here in the Southern Zone, there are people reporting some kind of foundation or support failure on their properties. Whether its a pool, garage, home or hotel, if it was not properly secured during construction, chances are good you may face support issues in the future, especially considering the terrain we have in Southern Costa Rica.
