The collection, inspired by the designer’s creative roots in steeldrum music, is a fusion of elegant, timeless and classic themes; open hoops with intricate designs, bold cuffs in 18K gold with brilliant citrine, strong sculptural necklaces and sparkling contemporary rings with pavé gemstones.
“Each piece and each collection tells a part of the story,” says Liz. “I wanted to share the compelling message of indigenous creativity and resilience. This musical instrument, known also as the steelpan, was created out of abandoned oil drums in the island of Trinidad in the 1930s, before recycling or ‘green’ was fashionable;
Liz speaks with an authentic voice of this genre as relative of the 85 year old Ellie Mannette who is recognized globally as the Father of the Modern Steel Drum. Add to this, as a Harvard-educated lawyer she negotiated contracts with big oil companies for Trinidad while maintaining her heritage and advising local artistes on cultural entrepreneurship.
Her pieces have been selected as gifts for a bevy of artists, celebrities, and business executives, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, US actor Danny Glover, and singer Natalie Cole.
The collection gained further acclaim when the Government of Trinidad and Tobago selected the Liz Mannette hoop cufflinks and brooches as gifts to world leaders and their spouses including US President Barack Obama (a former classmate of Liz at Harvard) and US First Lady, Michelle Obama.
NYIGF is the nation's premier gift, home and lifestyle marketplace with more than 2,800 exhibitors featuring an extraordinary collection of fashion, home products and giftware. More than 29,000 attendees from all 50 states and 85 countries are expected.
The Liz Mannette Collection is sold in specialty stores and boutiques and is available at the Margot Adams Gallery in New York. For more information, visit www.lizmannette.com.
