By: Ranelle Golden At the end of 2008 Steve Houser was in great shape. He played golf, fished and worked out. It was in January '09 that Steve developed a chronic cough that wouldn't go away. It took many trips to the Emergency Room and treatment for persistent Pneumonia, before the doctor’s finally hospitalized him. Steve finally received a diagnosis of Pulmonary Sarcoidosis, a little known lung disease. It's an auto-immune disease with no known cause and no cure. It blocks the airways and makes the lungs very stiff so Steve struggles to breath. He couldn't walk 150 feet without stopping and gasping for air. After nearly 7 months of constantly declining health and strength Steve started treatment at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. They were able to relieve his symptoms enough that his energy started to come back and Steve felt good enough to start on a grueling exercise routine to struggle back to a level of health he once had. That didn't happen. Steve is doing better today, but will never be his old self again. He fights every day to work out and keep strong. His lung disease went into remission in late 2009 and Steve was feeling pretty good. Then in February and March of 2010, he relapsed and developed severe pneumonia. Thankfully, he survived this. Today Steve lives on a nebulizer for 15 to 20 minutes, four or five times each day. The nebulizer pumps a steroid and Albuterol into his lungs, and he has 3 different inhalers that he uses throughout the day just to keep his airways open. This will be a daily battle for Steve, for the rest of his life. Steve Houser suffers from the same lung disease that took the life of Bernie Mac. This event will raise awareness of this disease but will also play host to some talented performers such as Gemini, The Stringer Singers, Janani, and Magician Doug Kalcik. Ranelle Golden will premiere two of her films “Saving Amy” and “Dingo & Ringo”. Tickets will be sold for $10.0 0 with any net proceeds over the cost of the venue rental and expense will be given to Steve Houser for use with his medical care. You will have the opportunity to listen to Steve’s story and make donations as well. The Enzian Theatre in Maitland Florida will be hosting the PREMIERE and FUND RAISER on Saturday, September 11th, 2010 at 11:30 am. It is an exciting and fun way to honor the contributors in the battle against the disease, to educate guests, and to raise the funds needed to enable Steve House to receive medical care. It’s also part of Steve’s mission to inspire people to fight on, not to give up and still reach for your dreams. Tickets and donations may purchased thru this link http://savingamy.eventbrite.com Seating is limited. Tickets will not be available at the door. FACTS ABOUT THE LUNG DISEASE Sarcoidosis 1. Sarcoidosis is a medical mystery. There is no known cause or cure. For the patient it can be a very serious illness -- even fatal -- or it can be of little consequence. 2. Sarcoidosis is not contagious. 3. The disease can attack any organ of the body in any location. Pulmonary Sarcoidosis can cause loss of lung volume (the amount of air the lungs can hold) and abnormal lung stiffness. 4. Ninety percent of the cases of sarcoidosis are found in the lungs. Five percent of the cases are fatal; fifty-percent survive and improve, the remaining face a daily battle to keep the disease at bay. – Steve must perform 3 to 4 breathing treatments per day using a nebulizer. 5. Anyone, male or female of any race can develop sarcoidosis. # # # Ranelle Golden is a multi-talented Author, Screenwriter, Director and Producer.
