Winona State University Professor Emeritus Wins Sigurd F. Olson Conservation Award

Aug. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Winona State University Professor Emeritus Calvin Fremling was awarded the Sigurd F. Olson Conservation Award by the Izaak Walton League for his contributions to conservation.
   
“I’m very appreciative of the award and thank all of my students and colleagues who inspired me to do the work that earned me this prestigious award,” said Fremling.
   
Fremling has spent much of his adult life studying the Upper Mississippi River. During his scientific career he published numerous journal articles and technical reports on the river. He is well known for his work on Mississippi River mayflies, which was featured in an Encyclopedia Britannica film and on the television program "Those Amazing Animals." Fremling also shared his vast knowledge of the Upper Mississippi through his book “Immortal River.”
   
Fremling received his Bachelor of Science in biology and physical science from St. Cloud State University in 1951 and his Master of Science in biology in 1955. After completing his Ph.D. in 1959, he joined WSU for 32 years until his retirement in 1991. Fremling was presented with The McKnight Family Scientific Fund Award in 1967 for his contributions to college biology teaching, and the Minnesota Chapter of the American Fisheries Society presented him with its Award of Excellence for Distinguished Contributions to Aquatic Education and Aquatic Biology/Fisheries in 1989. He was honored by Brainerd Community College as the Alumnus of the Year in 1985 and by St. Cloud State University in 1993.
   
His work on the Weaver Bottoms Rehabilitation Project was recognized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which presented the project its highest award for projects worldwide. In 1976, the Minnesota Academy of Science presented Fremling with its Distinguished Service Award in Scientific Research, and in 1992 the Mississippi River Research Consortium presented him with the Friend of the River award in recognition of his river research.
