Aug. 3, 2010 - PRLog -- SEATTLE – Experts say driving while texting is more dangerous than driving drunk. The SMS Speak Android app from Seattle-based Houston Things, LLC hopes to keep the roadways safer, while not interrupting essential text messages, by converting speech to text for both incoming and outgoing messages.

“Our Android app makes it safe for people to communicate on their cell phone while driving,” said Jamie Houston with Houston Things, LLC. “Our app allows users to convert text to speech to avoid looking at their cell phone while on the road.”

The SMS Speak Android app allows users to easily send and reply to text messages without looking at the phone and typing a reply. After listening to the incoming text, relayed as speech, the cell phone user only needs to speak their reply which is then converted back to text and is sent to the other user. It also can be used to originate a text message, simply by speaking into the phone.

“Just to make sure the message was heard correctly, SMS Speak will speak the message back and ask for approval before it is sent,” Houston said. “It is even compatible with Bluetooth technology for headsets and in-car communication systems.”

A recent survey of teens conducted by Seventeen Magazine and the Automobile Association of America (AAA) uncovered the fact that 84 percent of teens surveyed knew that distracted driving lead to accidents, however 86 percent still participated in distracting activities, such as texting.

“The SMS Speak Android app can easily ensure that teens keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the steering wheel,” Houston said. “Our new app can greatly decrease the amount of accidents, and the amount of traffic tickets given out, due to distracted driving.”

The app is available on Android enabled smart phones in the Android Marketplace for the affordable price of $2.99. It currently has a customer satisfaction rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
