-- The expression "gangsta" comes from "gangster" or a street criminal. During the Prohibition Era, gangsters, like Al Capone donned double-breasted pinstripe suits. The more expensive the attire, the more feared the criminal. Snazzy suits and John Dillinger hats portrayed an image of bravado and fierceness in the wearer. The usual accessories included, submachine guns, revolvers, pistols and a willingness to use them. As eras changed, so did the term "gangsta". Society has been fascinated with gangsters both onscreen and in real life. Flashy suits, dark sunglasses and expensive cars have appealed to both men and women. Men are drawn to the mystery and danger present in the underground world of gangsters. Aside from the violence and excitement often seen onscreen, gangsters are known for their sharp sense of style. So where do true gangstas get their gear? Just about anywhere, honestly. They appreciate the finer things in life-Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci-but they also know that they can look just as fresh in a plain white tee from Target. The common dressing style today is when referring to gangster can be best described as "baggy" or even"sloppy"
