July 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Modern digital video (DV) cameras from manufacturers such as Sony, JVC, Panasonic, and others are usually equipped with two output ports. One - for transferring data (Firewire/USB), and another one for previewing and viewing the video from the camera on a separate TV or monitor (usually HDMI). The main advantage to the HDMI port is that the video is sent to it in real time, meaning that whatever the camera operator sees is what is being output through the HDMI port.

As such, real-time video from HDMI-equipped cameras can be used in a multitude of ways. Firstly, the video can be used for a live broadcast or webcast, for high resolution video calling (including Skype), web conferencing, as well as immediate and real-time post-processing and encoding of the captured video. All of this can easily be done if you were to have an HDMI input on your PC or Mac.

Thus, a HDMI input must be added. A HDMI signal is effectively the same thing as a DVI signal, but with slightly different pin layout and support for audio. There is a multitude of video capture cards that support DVI and HDMI signal capture. The easiest and quickest way to add such a capture card to a PC, laptop, or Mac, is to use the DVI2USB Solo external USB video capture device from Epiphan Systems.

Using the DVI2USB Solo, a DVI-in port is instantly added to your computer. Then, through the means of an HDMI cable and HDMI to DVI adapter (usually retails for around $5), you are able to have a setup that is able to record, archive, and broadcast the video signal from the HD camera in real time. DVI2USB Solo is recognized a high resolution video-in port on the PC or Mac, meaning that it can be used with virtually any software that accepts an external video signal, including VirtualDub, Adobe Premiere, QuickTime, Windows Media Encoder, and others.
HDMI video capture has lots of other potential uses, and the possibilities are limitless as long as you have a video capture device that is able to handle a DVI or HDMI stream.
