July 29, 2010 - PRLog -- I have a objective, of building my very own Mirror Dinghy. If I just had my Mirror Dinghy Plans.  Not much horribly difficult, a little straight forward one sheet skiff, or maybe a canoe. During my dream, the last few centuries have slipped away, and it is a beautiful early summer day somewhere within the North-East of what has grown to be called The brand new World, perhaps on St. Lawrence river, or one of many Great Lakes, or one of the many waterways that criss-cross the Canadian Shield.

My Mirror Dinghy plans are sketched over a few sheets of worn and creased foolscap, or possibly parchment. The craft of stitch and glue boat building, learned through the native Algonquins and utilized by them to build their great war canoes, I now put to some more tranquil use. The stitching cures within the strong summer sun. It's a sturdy boat, which will take me long and far.

In the early morning I slip away from our small settlement, coasting quietly in the stillness, studying the swish of river reeds about the sides of my boat, the soft splash of my oars within the water. Casting a line in waterto catch my meal. In the evening, the smell of smoke from my campfire and the sound of crickets chirping, and the next morning, onwards once more.

Right here is the world the proud and independant fur traders made their very own. Men having a flavor for adventure together with a calling towards the wild locations, these people negotiated with all the native peoples for any magnificent bounty from the rich boreal forests, coming back to towards the settlements or maybe trading outposts to get more trade pieces, provisions, powder and ball for that musket. Then it's to the lake.

Within my dream, this is now my own world. I paddle through the broad, primeval widerness, around the uncounted and uncountable rivers. Through gorges as well as rapids, past sheer cliffs along with islands clogged with fir and spruce, and stair-like waterfalls, dipping my blade inside the mirror-flat lakes as a call from the loons echoes from the way distance.

That's my dream, anyway. How realistic could it be? Unrealistic, Perhaps. For instance, I can't voyage back in time 300 years. For another (and then knowing things regarding boat building, then you noticed this), the art of stitch and glue boat building is rather modern development, not the technique learned through the Algonquins, not something that they had from the time of Radisson and Groseilliers and the voyageurs . So please forgive my little anachronism. Remember, it's only a dream.

And in ways, that makes my dream very likely to be realized. Building your own private boat is a lot, not as difficult today than it ever was previously. No, you can't get rich off the fur trade, but those primeval forests criss-crossed and dotted with a thousand rivers and lakes remain out there. It is possible to still recapture that feeling, that sense of adventure. All you need to get started is a boat...
