July 29, 2010 - PRLog -- In 2009 Michael Lambert II and Kirt Hale came to the aid of Teachers in Metro-Atlanta's Clayton County with the Write On! School Supplies Drive.  This year the duo have returned to assist teachers primarily in Fulton County and Atlanta Public Schools.  Our 2010-11 goal is to supply 1000 teachers with supplies which will enable them to do their job easier.  If you would like to donate supplies or resources to this cause please don't hesitate to contact us at 678-886-6920 or writeoncampaign@gmail.com.

Ever since furloughs and other financial burdens placed upon teachers nationwide the focus has not been on the children.  The Write On! campaign's mission is to deliver supplies to teachers to foster a positive classroom environment for their students.  We can not do this alone and need your help.  Imagine a child without supplies to take notes.  Imagine a classroom full of students with no supplies, no hope.  Imagine a teacher in such a classroom situation.

We want to focus on 1st and 2nd year high school students who we have labeled as "high risk".  The average teacher to student ratio is 1:15 in Fulton County.  In order to have a successful campaign we would need approximately 15,000 supplies.  Although some kids may be able to provide their own school supplies, teachers need to be prepared to help kids who either don't have their own or don't have what the teachers want them to use.

Below is a list of supplies you can donate:

Paper

A variety of paper is necessary in most classrooms. The backs of Xeroxed copies are perfectly adequate--and an environmentally sound choice--for rough drafts and brainstorming purposes. Elementary-ruled paper is a basic supply needed for beginning writers. In classrooms where kids do not provide their own notebooks, teachers need a supply of good-quality notebook paper for final copies and other class work. Teachers should stock reams of copy paper in classrooms where computers will be used.

Writing Utensils

A supply of No. 2 pencils with erasers is essential, and an electric pencil sharpener is a worthwhile investment. Younger students will need primary pencils, which are easier to grasp and manipulate. Older students need pens for final copies and projects; kids particularly like using erasable pens. Teachers also need to have either chalk for a blackboard or erasable markers for a whiteboard.

Resource Items

Every classroom needs the basics for rudimentary research. A computer with an Internet connection eliminates the need for encyclopedias, but a few dictionaries, a thesaurus, an atlas and a globe should be available for kids to use. Classrooms also should display calendars that are used to keep track of the day, teach young students the days of the week and make notes of deadlines for projects and dates for school events. Keep a supply of thumbtacks for bulletin boards.

Project Supplies

A variety of craft supplies provides a teacher with an opportunity to come up with all kinds of creative activities. Even high school students sometimes need to mat a piece of writing, tape together the pages of a project or highlight sentences on a page. A basic supply list includes construction paper, school glue, scissors, colored pencils, crayons, markers, tape, rulers and a stapler.

Storage

School supplies need to be readily available and organized in a way that lets kids and teachers easily access them. It is important to buy shelves that are adequately sized to avoid stacking supplies in precarious piles. If you plan to store items in tubs, buy smaller ones and clearly label each one.
