By: Liz Bartling That’s where Cram Stoppers comes in. An online study site, launching on August 1, and designed by Atlanta business woman and mom of two, Julie Wilson, Cram Stoppers provides a logical way for students to prepare for critical tests and exams, without cramming last minute. Typically, a student will receive a study guide outlining the gist of what will likely be on a test or exam. Coupled with class notes and handouts, a student has all the tools he or she needs to get ready for a test. “Our Cram Stoppers program allows members to design their own tests, in the formats they prefer, input their study guide information, and then take tests as many times as needed,” comments Julie Wilson, founder of Cram Stoppers. Members can even study together through a feature called Buddysharing. Additionally, Cram Stoppers offers a “Community Library” which provides students with a place to locate quizzes designed by peers -- across the street or across the country -- at various high school and college levels. Any Cram Stoppers user can contribute a quiz to the library or copy a quiz for personal use. Using the handy “edit” function, any quiz from the Community Library can be tailored by the student to his or her liking. “Cram Stoppers can be used for any subject – even math, art and foreign language -- and a ‘text edit’ option allows students to create tests using features like bold, italics, underline and various font sizes and types,” says Wilson. With essay writing becoming more and more critical on state-mandated tests and a skill that college students must embrace in order to be successful, Cram Stoppers has a special feature called “Just Keep Writing,” providing students a unique way to develop and polish writing skills – at their convenience and at their pace. “What I like about ‘Just Keep Writing’ is that the program demystifies the writing process for students of all levels and writing abilities and can help college students brush up on their writing skills. Students can log on and literally learn, step-by-step, the mechanics of writing, in a non-threatening, friendly way. They can learn at their own pace without the pressure of trying to keep up with a teacher in a classroom environment,” In addition to quiz creation, Cram Stoppers provides fun polls, interesting tips, quotes, facts and stats, and a “word of the week” on the home page, to entertain and educate students as they buckle down to study. “Our goal with Cram Stoppers is to train students in the art of preparation while making studying more fun on a daily basis. We’d like to see the ‘all nighters’ go away so that our students can enjoy a more well-rounded school life, live healthier, and just become more confident in the classroom,” says Wilson. With Cram Stoppers, an initial time investment can offer a student a huge payoff in the long run. Creating a quiz from text books or class notes as a student reviews them provides the chance to “practice quiz” and discover how much one actually knows his or her material. And since practice quizzes are stored, they can be taken multiple times, provide immediate feedback, and can be combined with other quizzes for cumulative studying. This is good news because there’s no need to have to re-read textbook chapters or review notes again. Wilson developed Cram Stoppers after creating and watching the success of her original study site, Qwizzy’s World. Qwizzy’ Cram Stoppers will be sponsoring an end of the school year essay writing contest in 2011, with a scholarship and prizes awarded.
