How to find the service records on your Honda before you make a used car purchase?

This article will show you few tricks and trade secrets when it comes to purchasing a used Honda, and this is the fourth part of our article series.

July 23, 2010 - PRLog -- If you are looking for a quality used car then Honda is definitely a good choice of brand due to its high resale value, as well as the reliability of a Honda. There are few things you should be aware of before making a purchase, making you an educated buyer so you can ensure you are getting a quality product. In the last article we discussed about Honda's timing belt and water pump replacement schedule. If you missed that information please refer to the previous article in this series. In this article we will be discussing the issues of locating and gathering your previous service records. When you are selling your Honda, it is quite simple to gather your service records as the owner of the vehicle. Simply contact your local Honda dealership (the one you are using for the regular maintenance of your vehicle) and they will be more than happy to print out and give you the file.

The tricky thing will be if you have already purchased a used Honda privately from a seller without this paperwork. For you as the next owner to gather this information would be a lot more difficult. In Canada all the Honda dealerships are not networked together to share the service records, usually the dealership will keep its own customer information in a database. To gather the service records from the previous owner will involve you calling few local Honda dealerships, and use the Vehicle Identification Number located near the driver side bottom windshield to identify the vehicle. Now because this service will involve some one from the dealership actually looking up the information, printing it, may even involve mailing it to you. Be extra nice when you are speaking to your service advisors at the Honda dealer, since the service is free, and they will not be paid so in essence they are doing you a favor.

When you have the service records on hand, read through them carefully. You should read the recommendations from the service records, since most of the Honda dealers will follow their maintenance schedule. Changing oil and filter, and brake services are pretty standard practice but watch out for any suggestion regarding changing transmission fluid, or suspension components or something else even bigger than that.
