Drummer Legend Picks a Winner!
Drummer Bobby Orr picks prize draw winners at DrumWright in Woodley.
DrumWright customers in Woodley, Berkshire were treated to a rare treat last week when legendary drummer Bobby Orr visited the store and picked the winners for their spectacular World Cup Summer event.
Legendary British drummer Bobby Orr made a special trip to Reading drum shop DrumWright to pick the winning entries for DrumWright’s World Cup competition.
The company had put together a prize valued at over £6000 for a World Cup competition. DrumWright Managing Director, Chris Wright, explained “Summer trade can be quiet, especially when there is good weather. With the World Cup on too, we knew we had to do something spectacular to tempt customers away from the TV screen.”
DrumWright’s prize “squad” was initially set at 22, with another 4 prizes being added for each England goal (including the one that should have been).
On behalf of DrumWright, Bobby drew out the prizes 'FA cup style'. All those customers who spent over £100 at DrumWright over the world cup were entered into one pot, and the 26 prizes in another. Bobby drew one from each until all 26 prizes were awarded. The prizes included items not usually seen in a raffle like this. Top prize was a stunning Gretsch USA Anniversary kit worth over £3600.
Bobby is one of the true greats of British drumming – and for me, Britain’s greatest heavy drummer: A Gretsh International player himself, Bobby has played with such greats as Sammy Davis Junior, Bing Crosby and Billy Eckstein. He was the only British drummer to play with the legendary Barry Gordon Orchestra, for whom he did three tours. He has played on hundreds of chart hits, including Helen Shapiro’s “Walking Back to Happiness” in the 60’s.
Notes for Editors

*The winner of the Gretsh drumkit came from Rugby, but there were several local prizewinners too.
* Bobby Orr plays Gretsh drums himself, as do drumming luminaries such as Phil Collins and Charlie Watts.
