Follow on Google News | A Celebration of the Arts at the 2010 Swansea Festival of Music and the ArtsWales’ largest Festival of its kind, the Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts, takes place this year between 7 and 17 October.
By: City and County of Swansea The aim of the Festival, which has been in existence for over 60 years, is to bring a diverse programme of top class international and national established talent - along with promoting new talent - to Swansea and West Wales. Three internationally acclaimed pianists perform at some of the concerts and recitals taking place at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea, during the Festival. Celebrated Welsh pianist Llŷr Williams - himself a former winner of the John Fussell Award for Young Musicians, joins regular Festival contributors, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, on 9 October. The orchestra is to be conducted by Tadaaki Otaka and will include music by Schumann and Mahler. On 15 October Russian pianist Nikolai Demidenko, renowned for his expertise in the Russian concerto repertoire, will perform with the Tchaikovsky Orchestra of Moscow Radio conducted by Norwegian Terje Mikkelsen in a programme of works by Rachmaninov, Shostakovich and the Norwegian composer Ole Olsen. On 16 October Vladimir Ashenazy conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in a concert of Sibelius, Grieg and Rachmaninov, featuring the Moscow-born pianist Nikolai Lugansky. Celebrated harpist, Catrin Finch, also a former John Fussell Award winner, and organist Thomas Trotter both give recitals at the Festival on 12 and 11 October respectively, with the Orchestra of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama performing Mervyn Burtch’s The First Dragon in a schools concert outreach project on 14 October. . On 13 and 14 October the Swansea Grand Theatre welcomes Welsh National Opera with two operas for the Festival. A new production of Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, with Dennis O’Neill and Lisa Milne, and Mozart’s The Magic Flute with popular Welsh baritone, Neal Davies. Also at the Grand on 11 October Tchaikovsky’ The Taliesin Arts Centre has contemporary dance with six-strong male dance team The Featherstonehaughs; Three Festival events take place at St.Mary’s Church, Swansea. On 10 October the Cantemus Chamber Choir of Wales conducted by Robert Court will perform Monteverdi’s magnificent Vespers of 1610. On 12 October there is a Live Music Now 20th Anniversary Concert - Mapping Wales and on 17 October Ralph Allwood conducts the National Youth Choir of Wales. There will be visual art exhibitions throughout the Festival by Locws International, and at the Mission Gallery and the Oriel Ceri Richards Gallery at the Taliesin Arts Centre. An opportunity to visit all of these visual art exhibitions in an Art and Pasta tour coach, ending with a pasta lunch, will leave from outside the Guildhall at 10.30am prompt on 10 October.
