By: Mark Orr, Certified Financial Planner Most Equity Indexed life insurance policies have interest crediting rates that are tied to the raw S&P 500 index (but not invested in the market). Most of these policies will credit a floor of zero percent when the index goes down during the year and will credit the percentage gain of the index subject to a cap (usually between 12-15%). The intent of these policies is to provide stock market-like gains with the no losses due to the performance of the S&P 500 index. So in 2008, when the index went down by some 37%, the cash invested in policies with a zero percent crediting floor did not get reduced at all by the S&P losses. In policies with a minimum crediting of 2%, the cash in those policies would have actually earned 2% in 2008, despite the huge drop in the index. When properly structured to minimize the death benefit to maximize the cash accumulation potential, these policies can provide tax-free supplemental retirement income through policy loans and withdrawals.
