Access to Breckland Council’s website is set to increase thanks to BrowseAloud

Access to Breckland Council’s website is set to increase thanks to a new free service which reads the website aloud to visitors.

July 19, 2010 - PRLog -- The service, called BrowseAloud, makes the website accessible to those who have sight difficulties or require reading support – some 20pc of the UK population. It works by reading web pages aloud in a human-sounding voice.

Users simply download a free piece of software by following a link at the top of the council’s homepage and from then on, when the software is enabled, the user simply hovers their mouse pointer over the text to hear it read aloud.

The software also offers a range of other features:
•   Reads web pages aloud in a human-sounding voice (Includes websites, intranets, extranets, html, accessible Flash, alt tags)
•   Reads secure web pages
•   Reads PDF and Word documents in their original format
•   Highlights each word as it is spoken to show you where you are on the page
•   Magnifies text to your chosen font size and font style
•   Translates word-for-word between English, French, German, Italian and Spanish
•   Looks up accurate dictionary definitions
•   Converts text to MP3
•   Masks information on the screen to help you focus on a particular area

The launch of BrowseAloud represents the completion of the first stage of the council’s digital development strategy which will also see a new user focused website launched later in the year and the council incorporate social media into its communications strategy.

Lady Kay Fisher, Executive Member for Communications, said: “BrowseAloud will enable more people than ever before to access the important information on our website.

“It is free and easy to use and ensures that the council website is a service as many people as possible have access to.”
