Follow on Google News | Ruka, Lapland Now Easier To Get To With More Airlines.More visitors from abroad are discovering Ruka in Lapland as 3 more airlines schedule flights to Kuusamo airport.
By: Heather Sunderland The recently expanded Kuusamo airport is now a regular port of call for three more airlines. Baltic air started their flights on the 1st of April this year flying from Riga, Lativia and advertising prices for as little as 50€ each way. From Riga they have flights throughout much of Europe including the UK. Blue1, a Scandinavian airline, will be starting flights to Kuusamo this winter and although flights will change at Helsinki and either Copenhagen or Stockholm, it is possible to book a ticket straight through from the UK. The third airline, FinnComm Airlines, are flying to Kuusamo for the summer months from Helsinki, the capital of Finland in the south of the country. Why the sudden interest in Ruka? Ruka has been a well guarded secret by the Finns for years but is fast becoming better known by visitors from abroad with travel companies such as Inghams Travel and Voigt Travel making it a regular destination. The main reason for its popularity is the wide range of activities on offer throughout both the winter and summer seasons as well as its guaranteed snow during the winter months. The winter season lasts about 200 days in Ruka with guaranteed snow of depths fro 30 to 90cm's, temperatures ranging from +5 to -25C and the northern lights undulating overhead. The ski resort of Ruka has 29 groomed slopes, 23 floodlit slopes for night skiing, over 500km of cross country ski tracks and several children's designated ski areas. It is also much more than just a ski resort with snowmobile safaris, snowshoe hikes, ice carting, husky sledding, reindeer sleigh rides and trips to visit Santa both at home and at his official office at the Arctic circle. The summer couldn't be more different in weather, with warm sunny days, 24 hours of daylight during midsummer and green forests full of animals and plants. The reindeer roam free in Lapland and can often be seen on the roads druing the summer, other large animals native to the area are wolves, elk, lynx and the very timid brown bear and wolverine. There are hiking trails, mountain biking routes, white water rapids to shoot, rivers and lakes to canoe on or fish in, husky dogs to take hiking, bear watching trips to go on and stunning scenery to take in. The accommodation is often another reason people choose Ruka. As well as hotels and apartments like other European ski resorts, Ruka has 100's of beautiful log cabins set in tranquil settings such as forests and lakes banks, with cabins for groups as small as 2 people and large enough to hold 24; perfect for a romantic holiday, family groups or large groups that wish to stay in the same accommodation. With the new Ruka village scheduled to be open in full for winter 2010 and now plenty of extra flights to the local airport, just a 20 minute drive away, it's not surprising so many more visitors from abroad are discovering the delights of Ruka, Lapland.
