Orlando (July 15, 2010) – The Orlando Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will hold its Art for the Cure: Art Show and Silent Auction event to raise awareness and money for pancreatic cancer research. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, yet it is the most under-funded, under-recognized and least-studied of the leading cancer killers. Currently, less than 2 percent of the National Cancer Institute’s federal research funding is allocated to pancreatic cancer. In 2010, an estimated 43,140 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 36,800 will die.

Pancreatic Cancer has the highest mortality among leading cancer killers with a five year survival rate of just 6 percent. The disease has claimed the lives of many public figures, including actor Patrick Swayze, Carnegie Mellon University Professor Dr. Randy Pausch, actor Michael Landon, opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti, famed journalist Dith Pran, Hall of Fame NBA coach Chuck Daly and NFL Players Association President Gene Upshaw.

The Art for the Cure Art Show and Silent auction will feature local artists who have joined the fight to end Pancreatic Cancer. Patrons of the art show will be treated to complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres as well as live entertainment. A silent auction will cap the event allowing art enthusiasts the opportunity to bid on one of a kind artwork and other great items, Throughout the evening patrons will also be able to collaborate with artists to create a unique work of art.
