Newport Community Games Ready For Kick-off!

Youth sport festival taking place in Newport during official London 2012 Open Weekend marking 2 years until the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

July 14, 2010 - PRLog -- Over 200 young people are gearing up to join in the Newport Community Games. Taking place on the 23rd of July, 11am to 4pm, the event will see various locations across Newport play host to a wide variety of free sporting activities. Great British sprinter athlete Tyrone Edgar, and former 800m Commonwealth Champion Diane Modahl, will be in attendance to witness the games and cheer on those taking part.

Organised by Newport City Council’s Sports Development Team, in partnership with national youth sports development charity StreetGames, the Community Games are sponsored by Sport Wales. Taking place throughout Newport in venues such as in the Velodrome and the Active Living Centre, a wide variety of sports are being made available including futsal, athletics and dodgeball. An Olympic theme will run through the day with young people representing different nations during the competitions. The Community Games are taking place during the official 2012 Open Weekend, celebrating two years until the London 2012 Olympics.

StreetGames is a national charity dedicated to bringing “doorstep sport” to disadvantaged communities, allowing young people to decide how and what sports they want to play. The council’s ongoing work with the charity demonstrates its commitment to providing the young people of Newport and the surrounding areas with free and varied sports sessions.

In attendance will be Tyrone Edgar, the 100m athlete who represented Great Britain in the 2009 Berlin World Championships, winning a bronze medal in the sprint relay. He said: “I’m excited to attend the Newport Community Games. Sport should be available to all young people regardless of postcode. The variety of sports available is brilliant for letting young people experience different games, challenges and techniques. Projects like these provide a framework for more young athletes to get involved who may otherwise have not, and that has to be great for British sport.”

This event underlines the work Newport City Council’s Sports Development Team is doing with StreetGames to provide free and accessible sport for young people within disadvantaged communities. Having been granted the London 2012 Inspire Mark for its Legacy Leaders programme, StreetGames is keen to help more young people be inspired by sport. The Newport Community Games is the perfect example of this in practice and will hopefully be a catalyst for further sports development in the area.

Launched in 2007, StreetGames is an award winning national charity and a national centre of expertise for developing sport in disadvantaged communities. The charity makes sport accessible to all young people, regardless of their income or social circumstances. It does this by supporting and establishing local projects around the UK that deliver doorstep sport, i.e. positive activities and sport provided to young people when they want it, where they want it and how they want it. Over 1million attendances have already been generated by StreetGames projects.

StreetGames’ ongoing work to change sport, communities and lives has been recognised by The Chief Medical Officer’s Public Health Awards, The Charity Awards, The Business Charity Awards and Beyond Sport.
