Follow on Google News | Crowd-funding Could Be the Answer for One Small Business Owner’s Goal for Expansion.Owens Burton Consulting is embarking on a crowd-funding campaign called The Power of CARE™ Project to raise funds to produce new products and services and hire staff.
By: Nadine Owens Burton Nadine Owens Burton -- Founder and President of Owens Burton Consulting, a speaking and quality improvement services company -- is not unlike many small business owners, desperately in need of capital to finance her sales, marketing and hiring goals. Yet, attracting the attention of venture capitalists and angel investors is a complicated and challenging endeavor. This is especially true if you are not a tech company. In this economy, many businesses, even those with the best sales records, spotless credit and stellar business plans are finding it hard to secure financing – debt or equity – to catapult them to the next level. Some companies are betting on crowd-funding campaigns as the answer to their development needs. Owens Burton Consulting is just one company taking a chance on this fund-raising strategy. According to Wikipedia: “Crowd funding (sometimes called crowd financing or crowd sourced capital) describes the collective cooperation, attention and trust by people who network and pool their money together, usually via the Internet, in order to support efforts initiated by other people or organizations. Crowd funding occurs for any variety of purposes, from disaster relief to citizen journalism to artists seeking support from fans, to political campaigns.” This fund-raising model has provided the inspiration for several websites. Kickstarter.com and Indiegogo.com concentrate on helping creative types such as artists and independent film makers find sponsors for their projects. For those who have a cause to support or are seeking volunteers, they have the option of sites like celebrity founded Crowdrise.com. Sites like Sponsorpark.com provide a venue for individuals and organizations looking for sponsors for a variety of projects and events. Because of securities regulations and restrictions, for-profit businesses seeking to raise capital through crowd-funding are presented with a few limitations. Businesses may reduce these challenges by crafting crowd-funding projects that are more pre-selling of products or services, or that are sponsorship based, rather than the selling of equity shares in the company. Ms. Owens Burton has created a crowd funding project to raise funds through the selling of sponsorships and marketing services. Entitled The Power of CARE™ Crowd-funding Project, it takes its name from one of Ms. Owens Burton’s quality improvement workshops and speaking themes. The project goal is $1,000,000 and 1 million “likes” on the Facebook fanpage she created for the project. According to Ms. Owens Burton, “the funds raised will allow me to self publish several books and videos based on The Power of CARE™ and create an online community and magazine based on the basic foundations of the concepts of the framework. This will be my own economic stimulus package, as it will allow me to create new jobs and put money back into my local economy. In addition, it will be a synergistic marketing project where the sponsors will be able to network together to create other smaller, more local marketing events.” Based on their level of contribution, sponsors will receive several marketing services, ranging from the listing of their names in the first published book and on the website, to the saving of 50% off future website advertisements for a period of 1 to 5 years. All sponsors also will receive copies (electronic or print) of the book. Higher level sponsors would receive additional sponsorship benefits. Ms. Owens Burton has been involved in several non-profit communities over the years, both as a director and a volunteer. She believes that non-profit organizations are the epitome of the Power of CARE™ philosophies. “Non- In addition, The Power of CARE™ Project has as its goal to be a fundraising strategy for several non-profit organizations across the country through the book promotion and speaking tour. “If I am successful in reaching my sponsorship goals, the book promotion tour would include several speaking events where the proceeds from ticket sales would go to local non-profit partners. These events will be what we used to call ‘a party with a purpose’ where attendees are motivated and inspired and the benefiting organizations gain much needed funding.” About The Power of CARE™ The Power of CARE™ is a product of Owens Burton Consulting.
