Follow on Google News | Human Rights and Hanging with the BandProjects Abroad Human Rights volunteers Talbot Beck and Justin Miller met Lead Singer Simon Van Wyk from South African band, The Brothers Streep who played the FIFA stage during the World Cup.
By: Hannah Lane, Projects Abroad South African bands were invited to audition to play the FIFA stage through PANSA – Performing Arts Network of South Africa. The Brothers Streep were chosen to play 3 gigs, 2 of these were in Cape Town for the official FIFA fan fest and the third gig was played in Khayelitsha Community Centre, a FIFA public viewing area. Volunteers Justin and Talbot have been working on Human Rights Projects in South Africa during the World Cup and had the opportunity to meet the band after they were introduced by a member of Projects Abroad staff. Emma Muller is our Social Media Manager for South Africa and is engaged to the bass player of the band. Justin is working on research for overcrowding in prisons in South Africa and with people awaiting trials, he has also met with members of Parliament who sit on the committee of correctional services. Talbot has been working on the Bonnytoun project which works with former gang members, to help educate them about more productive activities including writing projects. # # # Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 by Dr. Peter Slowe, a geography professor, as a program for students to travel and work while on break from full-time study.
