Generation Next security awareness campaign- introductory lesson for school children

.As a part of its corporate social responsibility; Comguard initiates a nationwide information security awareness campaign for the younger citizens of United Arab Emirates, preparing them for a safer tomorrow.

July 11, 2010 - PRLog -- Technology has been part of human lives ever since it was embraced to simplify the day-to-day chores right from the invention of the wheel.  Today, it has overtaken our concept of simplified living to become a source of entertainment, socializing and advanced communication methodologies. The vast reach of information technology in our lives called for an established system of securing our data assets. The usual information security measures seem to be insufficient when it comes to tender hearts. A lot of it is caused by the natural characteristics of youngsters such as curiosity, desire of independence and fear of punishment. We need to consider these characteristics while determining how to protect them in cyber space. The only permanent solution to the threats in the cyber world is to educate children about them and the possibility of them being a target for hackers, cyber stalkers and intruders.

As an industry leader in information security sphere; Comguard recognizes and acknowledges its responsibility to spread security awareness to the society. As a part of its corporate social responsibility; Comguard initiates a nationwide information security awareness campaign for the younger citizens of United Arab Emirates, preparing them for a safer tomorrow. As an introductory lesson to this initiative, information security expert Mr. George Jason addressed the students of Our Own English High School Dubai, a GEMS school.  He enlightened students on the information security threats they face in the cyber world. He emphasized the fact that inbuilt security settings alone on any social networking platform might not prevent them from being abused while they are socializing online.   Mr. Jason mentioned several third party add on’s that could compromise computers and the information present within.  He gave several examples on how Facebook can be used as a source of abuse by hackers and cyber stalkers. Moreover, online harassment is viewed as a serious offense that could probably get one behind the bars. The US law says a person commits a third degree felony, if the person posts one or more messages on a social networking site with the intent to harm, defraud, intimidate or threaten another person. Mr. Jason emphasized the necessity of every facebook user being aware of threats associated with third party applications on Facebook. Facebook has quite a few applications that had been compromised by malicious hackers. Although these application’s were small in number, a large number of users were affected. The Apps themselves were hacked as opposed to something like Facebook profile pages, a common target for the still-spreading Koobface worm.  Mr. Jason specifically addressed every online platform that youngsters use along with the threats they can pose to them.  Finally Mr. Jason reminded the students that any information shared on electronic platform is no longer theirs. Information generated electronically can never be destroyed. Therefore, its highly important to know what information is shared and to whom.
