Jamaican Newspaper selects Harland Simon

July 9, 2010 - PRLog -- The principles of the project are: Replacement of obsolete Fincor drives and obsolete PLC system; in addition, all proprietary communications are eliminated and replaced with an Ethernet/IP network connecting four Allen Bradley PowerFlex DC drives with an Allen Bradley CompactLogix PLC [all with built in RSLogix diagnostic software]. Furthermore, to increase supportability a touch screen HMI [Human Machine Interface] and central maintenance PC will be installed, thus streamlining fault finding procedures and allowing for remote diagnostic support via a VPN line.

At all times, the existing system will remain operational until the new system is fully tested and commissioned, which eliminates any risk to production. This method also keeps costs down while replacing all the vulnerable parts of the system. The solution is based on techniques that have been successfully developed for the replacement of many systems originally supplied by Goss, Rockwell Automation, manroland and Honeywell over the past 15 years.

Ian Roxburgh, Gleaner Company’s Special Projects Manager commented, “This is the Gleaner Company’s second transaction with Harland Simon. In 1990’s the drive for our Crabtree Viscount letterpress was replaced by a H.S. drive which worked well. The present project promises to be an ideal retrofit, as there will be little or no down-time and the price is competitive.”

The project is due to be completed by the 3rd quarter of 2010.
