July 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Beginners that are new to the encompassing and enjoyable game of golf, may be completely stumped when it comes to knowing the several types of golf clubs an average golfer uses. While it isn’t that hard to learn how to stand, swing and send a golf ball flying a few hundred feet, it is good to know exactly which type of club will provide you with the maximum amount of leverage and agility needed to put your new golfing buddies to shame. Each golf club offered on the market is designed to propose a certain type of “function” for those varying type of landscape and sandpits you may find yourself in throughout the game.

To become familiar with the various types of golf clubs you’ll see in the typical golfer’s bag, it is a plus to know the names of each one. Woods, irons, wedges, putters, utility clubs and hybrids are all different styles of clubs used on the playing field. A professional will know the difference between each one but, assuming we are all amateurs, the purpose of each one will be described and put into example for a better understanding as to why six different styles of golf clubs may be needed in one game of golf.

Let’s begin with woods. While the composition of this particular club is no longer made of wood, assuming that is how they got their name, they are the clubs whose deep club-heads are made of either metal or steel. Woods come in a 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 or 11-wood clubs. The suggested wood for rookies is the 1-wood (typically referred to as a driver). While this baby is no fun to learn how to handle, it is definitely worth the challenge if you expect to get you “game” up.
Irons are also golf clubs made of metal, but they tend to have a thinner, sleeker design to them. For the pro’s, the muscleback and blade irons are used more often, but for beginners, what is commonly referred to as a cavity-back iron is recommended because of how the back end of the head is somewhat alveolated. A wedge club is more of a customized type of iron that is generally used for certain situations, such as when the ball is surrounded by sand or is in a ‘deep’ area. Wedges aren’t used as often as other types of clubs. Now, putters can be considered the cutest type of golf clubs out there! Of course, that has no relevance to its functions, but it is good to know! Putters are generally used to tap the ball into its rightful place when it is merely inches away from the hole. Last, but not least, are your utility clubs and hybrids. These bad boys are designed to make hitting the ball from any level of player a more-efficient and stress-free process. While they are not as popular as the rest (yet), they are definitely making their mark in the golf world.

With this useful knowledge under your belt, you’ll be sure to breeze your way in and out of the playing field and no one will know how you did it. The golf clubs are the most important entities to the game; without the proper understanding of their uses, it’ll be a sure “hit-and-miss” everytime.
