Hailsham Town Council Quarterly CCTV Report

July 6, 2010 - PRLog -- Results show that between March 2010 and June 2010, there were 121 logged incidents which were captured by the use of the Hailsham town centre CCTV system. From these, there have been 12 total arrests, 6 CCTV-initiated arrests, with 7 other CCTV-initiated incidents recorded.

CCTV figures emphasise the importance of providing a CCTV service in Hailsham, towards which Hailsham Town Council, as a major strategic and financial partner in the project, contributes around £6,500 each year for the ongoing maintenance and a share of the transmission costs for eight CCTV cameras.

Located at key points in South Road, Western Road, North Street, George Street, Vicarage Lane and Hailsham High Street, the cameras currently record and receive a level of monitoring at the Brighton Monitoring Centre.

Cllr Bryan Burchmore, chairman of the Town Council’s Finance, Policy and Resources Committee states that, as recorded footage has been often used as evidence, the CCTV cameras have become a very useful tool in many court cases and addressing priority community safety issues: “Some of the reported arrests would not have happened had it not been for the use of the CCTV system.”

Adds Cllr Burchmore, “While it is important to ensure Hailsham town centre is a safe place for residents and visitors, CCTV is only part of the solution to tackle crime, vandalism and anti-social behaviour. It is partly the responsibility of members of the public to contact the police and report any crime or act of anti-social behaviour, should they arise.”
