July 1, 2010 - PRLog -- 4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS ARE NO BLAST FOR PETS
Celebrating the 4th of July with family and friends can be a lot of fun for people, but it can be downright scary for your animals, especially cats, dogs and horses. The loud noises from fireworks and commotion from Independence Day can be very stressful for pets and result in confusion or nervousness. Too often cats and dogs will run away or get into harmful situations because they’re terrified and agitated. Also, the thunder and lightning forecasted for the upcoming weekend can be frightening.
To keep your animals safe:
•   Keep pets indoors and away from crowds so that they feel more protected.
•   Your veterinarian may choose to prescribe a sedative for your animal if it tends to become easily spooked by the fireworks. Remember that your animal must be seen by a veterinarian in order to receive any prescribed medications.
•   If you have horses, be sure to keep them indoors and away from the sound of fireworks.
•   The 4th of July is also a good time to make sure that your pet is wearing  an ID collar and is micro-chipped.
•   Also, be alert if you have guests at your home as an open door can provide an opportunity for panicked pets to bolt outside.

Remember:  lighting fireworks may be a 4th of July tradition, but scaring your animals should not be!
