Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 by Dr. Peter Slowe, a geography professor, as a program for students to travel and work while on break from full-time study. The program was founded in Romania, where students were given the opportunity to teach conversational English. Today Projects Abroad has sent over 28,000 volunteers away to 26 different countries on 5 continents on over 500 different projects.
