Don’t Let Diabetes Run Your Life

If you’re diabetic, you will find that there’s a very fine line between ‘run’ and ‘ruin’. In the first instance, diabetes can simply take over control of your life, in the second it can destroy you completely and there’s no going back.

June 28, 2010 - PRLog -- Run diabetes out of your life before it starts running your life.

Your first course of action must include a visit to the doctor. And how should you know when to go for a check up? If you have a family history of diabetes, or if you think that you may be displaying some of the symptoms of diabetes, then it’s time to make the doctors appointment. Don’t go off the rails thinking that your life is over – it’s never over until it’s actually over! So get your act together and meet the physician to get tested for diabetes.

Ask the doctor to bring you up to speed on the causes, symptoms and consequences of having diabetes. You can also go on the internet. Familiarize yourself with the workings and malfunction of the endocrine system in your body – because that is what makes your blood sugar levels soar to levels above normal. The malfunctioning of the endocrine system results in your body not producing insulin (insulin serves to regulate your blood sugar levels and converts the sugar to energy), which means you are suffering from Type 1 diabetes. When your body can’t respond to the effects of the insulin produced, it implies Type 2 diabetes.

Of course, just because your level of blood sugar is above normal doesn’t mean you’re diabetic. However, it can mean that your tolerance to glucose is impaired, and hence you can be pre-diabetic. Although you may not have any symptoms at this stage, you can develop them before you develop Type 2 diabetes. In fact, at the pre-diabetic stage, you could also develop a heart condition which is often associated with diabetes. You will need to watch out for symptoms if you are pre-disposed to diabetes.

Never take any chances, get yourself tested regularly. Alternatively, use a blood sugar monitor or diabetes test strips if you want to monitor your condition at home. But don’t avoid a visit to the doctor after that.

There may be times that you may find yourself having extra strips frequently or occasionally. There are many reasons people have extra strips including:

*the doctor changing your machine
*testing yourself less frequently
*a loved one goes into a nursing home that provides the test strips for them
*...and more.
