Reputation Management: Getting Started

In order to get to know your business, you’re going to need to know what affects it.

June 28, 2010 - PRLog -- So here we are, getting ready to manage the reputation of our online business. If you have read the other posts on this site, then you will be well aware of what reputation management can do for you. Just for reference, here is the sort of process you might go through in order to get your reputation management underway.
Step 1: Write a list of keywords
In order to get to know your business, you’re going to need to know what affects it. The first step in finding out what you need to keep an eye on is to write a list of words that you associate with your business. If you own a dairy farm, your words might be “cow, milk, grass, cheese, moo” and so on. By doing this, and by making your list as detailed as you can, you can inspire yourself to think more deeply about the things connected to your business. It sounds silly, but it really works.
Step 2: Find your competitors and your influences
To find out what influences your business, and what sectors of the internet you need to watch for guidance about your business strategy, you can use your word list to search the internet using a search engine. It will let you know what people find on the internet when they search for words connected to your business. If they don’t find you, change things so that they do! It’s time for guerrilla marketing and search engine optimisation.
Step 3: Find the forums
...and the blogs, and the youtube channels, and the facebook pages. Anything that is even vaguely connected with your business – so that when someone says something that concerns your products (or might affect your business) you’re the first person to know.
Step 4: Get a presence
Interact with all the websites you can in order to draw attention to your site, so that as many people are aware of your products as possible. This means posting youtube videos, commenting on blogs, starting forum topics, and anything else that allows you to speak to a large number of people at the same time. Remember though, people tend to switch off when they realise someone is trying to sell them something, so it may be better to subtly mention your product as part of a separate discussion rather than plainly trying to tell everyone how great it is.
Step 5: Put the work in
Never, ever stop monitoring the activity of your market (the market for your product is all of the people who could possibly buy it). When you stop working to publicise your business it will go stale. As Frank Sinatra once said, “when it feels like you’re coating, you’re actually going downhill.”
Step 6: Use the power of the feedback loop
React to the things that you learn by making your business better, then find out what people think about your changes and react again. It is an endless cycle of development that will keep you ahead of your competition. This doesn’t mean completely overhauling your image every week – but a slight adjustment in your marketing strategy now and then can go a long way.
