Jaguar workers banned from wearing England shirts at work

June 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Employees at the Jaguar plant are up in arms at a management edict banning England clothing and flags from the factory.


Jaguar workers say they are not being allowed to leave early in time for the start of the potentially crucial England v Slovenia group game on Wednesday, June 23, which kicks off at 3pm.

One worker said: “You can imagine the strength of feeling about this. Nobody is happy. It’s ridiculous.

“Land Rover staff have been told that they will be allowed to finish early, but Jaguar staff have been told that they can’t.

“They have not explained why. We have only been told that staff must work the normal hours and that we cannot wear any kind of England clothes, badges or merchandise.

“It makes no sense because we were allowed to wear England clothes on St George’s Day.

“In 2002 and 2006 the staff were allowed to finish early as long as they made up the time later. They changed the night shift during the Japan World Cup.”

The wife of another worker said: “The memo says workers can’t wear any England clothing, shirts, take any flags into work etc.

“The company said if anyone wears an England shirt, they will be sent home.”

No comment was available from Jaguar but the company’s memo to workers says: “With the World Cup starting this week, the company has reviewed the timings of the England games and where these coincide with production shifts.

“Every effort has been made to find alternative operating patterns for these games across all manufacturing areas. Unfortunately, it has proven unfeasible to make adjustments.

“Therefore, manufacturing operations will run as normal in Jaguar West Midlands. Employees are reminded that only company-approved workwear should be worn at work and the use of personal stereos and/or radios whilst at work is also forbidden.”
