Terrapin Station Winery Opens Tasting Room: Maryland eco-friendly winery opens for visitors

June 21, 2010 - PRLog -- Elkton, MD. June 2010 – Terrapin Station Winery announces the opening of its new Tasting Room and invites the press and public to a Ribbon Cutting Celebration Friday, June 25 at 1:00 pm. The Winery is located in Elkton, MD at the corner of Ricketts Mill Road and Route 213.

The Terrapin Station Tasting Room will be open through summer and fall, with tasting hours from 12-6 pm Thursday – Saturday and 1-5 pm on Sundays. Visitors may also tour the vineyard and winery. For information/directions, visit the website http://www.terrapinstationwinery.com/visit/

Owners Morris and Janet Zwick began the winery in 2003 and started selling wines in 2008. Opening the Tasting Room represents the next step in the winery’s evolution. The Zwicks’ long-range plans are to build an extensive Wine Tasting and Entertainment facility on the property. The current temporary Tasting Room provides a relaxed environment for indoor/outdoor tasting overlooking the fields.

The casual atmosphere fits Terrapin Station’s unconventional and fun-loving approach. “Too often, wine is stuffy and complicated. We use the best grapes and production techniques available to make great wines, but try not to take it or ourselves too seriously,” says Morris Zwick, winemaker and company President. Current wines include three white wines: Cayuga, Vidal Blanc and Traminette; varietal reds Shiraz and Cabernet Franc and a Cecil Red blend. Their distinctive Five Rivers Rose’, made from St. Vincent grapes, and new Better Red than Dead port-style Merlot blend have been popular with wine festival crowds.

Talk of keeping things light and fun belies the Zwicks’ serious commitment to the environment. They purchased the family property to preserve the land for agriculture and to protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed from over-development. Terrapin Station wines are packaged in eco-friendly 1.5 Liter boxes which require less carbon energy to package, ship, store and recycle. The winery donates a portion of all proceeds to the Terrapin Institute to help restore the Diamondback Terrapin to its natural Maryland habitat.
