Simple procedures can cost a lot if you use a mechanic. So why not brush up on your car maintenance skills, invest in a car manual and save your hard-earned cash for something more interesting? Our car maintenance mini-series guides you through the basics. Here we tell you how to top up your engine coolant.

Modern cooling systems shouldn’t need constant top-ups, but it’s worth keeping a check on the levels, especially in summer when engines are more at risk of overheating.
You might be surprised to hear that a car needs anti-freeze all year round, so the coolant you put in should be a mixture of water and anti-freeze. Here’s how to top up if necessary:

1.   Check the coolant level
Make sure your engine is switched off and cold before checking coolant levels. Coolant is stored in the white expansion tank, which is the clear plastic container under the bonnet (check your manual). The tank will be marked with minimum and maximum levels so if the fluid has fallen below the minimum level you will need to add more coolant.

2.   Add coolant
First remove the expansion tank pressure cap. It is vital that the engine is cold to avoid scalding. Slowly unscrew the cap to release any pressure that may have built up. When the cap has been removed, pour a mix of water and anti-freeze into the tank (there are a variety of anti-freezes on the market so check your manual for the manufacturer’s recommended brand and don’t mix different types). When the level reaches halfway between the two markings, replace the cap and tighten securely.
