Check the coolant level Make sure your engine is switched off and cold before checking coolant levels. Coolant is stored in the white expansion tank, which is the clear plastic container under the bonnet (check your manual). The tank will be marked with minimum and maximum levels so if the fluid has fallen below the minimum level you will need to add more coolant. 2. Add coolant First remove the expansion tank pressure cap. It is vital that the engine is cold to avoid scalding. Slowly unscrew the cap to release any pressure that may have built up.
