Vanity Search Your Name In Google Before Your Big Job Interview

June 20, 2010 - PRLog -- If I were to search your name in Google right now, what would I find?  The answer to this question is not as scary as the fact that most people are not aware of items that are appearing on the first page of their search results.

What if Google is the reason that you’re still unemployed. Having negative items on the 1st page of your search results will definitely make it very difficult to find a new gig and here is why.

In a recent poll, a large percentage of Human Resource Managers admitted to conducting a Vanity Search on prospective applicants in an attempt to gage their character. In the same poll 85% of HR Managers replied that they always accept the first page results as factual. Now Image your bachelor party pictures from a recent trip to Vegas are now appearing under your name in the number one spot in Google. Do you see where I’m going with this?

Why Should You Care?

Sites like Google have become more than just website search engines; they have now become people search engines. Google has constructed dozens of large database centers throughout the United states. The main purpose of these centers are to store all search results from that particular region, and link searchers to relevant content from that area of the country.

Despite the fact that Google is very secretive about the locations and functions of these databases, here is the part that is most relevant to you. If I am in your town, and I search your name in a Google search bar, then chances are your name will appear at the top of the search results.

The best case scenario is to search your name and nothing appears, but even that is wishful thinking due to sites like Facebook and Twitter. Somewhere along the way we have lost all of our common sense when it comes to social networking sites. Sure in the initial beginning it was great to catch up with old friends from high school, but the side effects have resulted in private Tweets now appearing on the first page of Google. Yikes!

Once a Tweet or a post from your Facebook wall has landed on the 1st page of Google it will remain indexed forever. If you’re counting on the negative items to simply evaporate then you’re in for a rude awakening. Quite often negative sites appearing under your name are not as innocent as a Tweet from your girlfriend; unfortunately most negative items were place there intentionally and deliberately.

The good news is just because a negative site is appearing on the first page of your search results doesn’t mean that it has a right to be there. Your name is your brand, and just as large corporations vigorously protect their brands, so should you.

Update Your Resume and your Search Results

As you prepare your resume I also suggest that you search your name in search engines. Nothing is worst than to miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime all because of an old online article from back when you were freshmen in college.

Maybe you have already gone on several interviews and now coming to the realization that no one has called you back despite your previous experience and college degrees. Conducting a vanity search with your name as the keyword will allow you to see what a potential employer will see the moment they search your name.
