-WHAT FINANCIAL CRISIS !

Whilst the rest of the world is in Financial Crisis one small town in Gasgony –Gers is fighting back.

Sunday sees the first of two annual “Vide grenier “(empty attic),”car Boot Sale” in UK, or” Garage sale” in USA.It also marks the re- opening of a beautiful gallery by the church – GALERIE ECLECTIQUE
Which has been closed for the past 5 years due to the ill health and uncertain temper of the proprietor Christine Boutang. Boutang is the cousin of the recently deceased Arte director who is greatly responsible for the high reputation that channel has today , fostering programmes  such as the wonderful “ Thalassa”.

The gallery has been lent on this occasion to local artist Eric Gilham who , together with several other local artists is trying to rekindle the spirit of this dying little town  - which resembles so many others , bars and restaurant businesses hit by draconian NO SMOKING regulations and the best customers forced to huddle outside to enjoy an innocent cigarette , more in danger of dying of pneumonia than of lung cancer. Scenes which are repeated throughout Europe thanks to European community legislation.

However Aignan has a handsome ,dynamic , ambitious new Mayor in the guise of Philipe Baratault

In a soon to be released strategic plan for the township using international consultancy Oz (www.atozsurf.com) , to be presented to his town council at their next major meeting he will propose the simple Oz – Cio don’t shoot the Hippo plan !

Cutting costs will be a consultative exercise and following the lead of new British Prime Minister David Cameron, residents of the community will be invited to submit their own cost cutting ideas by emails ,post , snail mail ( letter ) or even carrier pigeon !

Monsieur the Mayor has already a list of his own ideas including:
*Beautification of the town square will be the major priority as it has become a very ugly parking lot.Only disabled people and pensioners will be able to park in the square with a pickup shopping facility for  5 minutes. Parking will be concentrated in the other car park by the new Salle de fete encouraging the able bodied to walk a bit and improve their health !Bicyclists will be able to park in the square and Aignan already has several of those – some of them well beyond their 70th Year !
A fund will be set up to commission a fountain and local nurseries will be encouraged to sponsor areas with their own plants which will allow them to advertise in the borders and their planting will be looked after by the Aignan horticultural society in consultation with the horticulturalists.
*selling/renting one of the two Salles de fete
*reducing street lighting after midnight.The town has a practically non existant crime rate and unsuccessful development areas such as the lottisment which floods and has no tenants,the zone artisanal which has one tenant and is lit by 20 street lights all night long , were white elephants inherited from his predecessors.
*Forming a new horticultural society to encourage the locals to help make the drab town beautiful again. This with the help of Giselle Rico and Mimi who have spent their lives doing exactly that .
*With two Antique shops in the town he would like Aignan to become a centre for antiques with numerous events joining artists and antique dealers  together.
*This is the home town, if we include Sabazan, of the charismatic Senator and Mayor of Aignan , Abel Sempe who did so much to put Aignan on the map with his enterprises and a museum of Armagnac possibly in the imposing old Sempe residence – is one possibility.Fundraising countrywide to be undertaken by notable residents such as Madame Helene Hun ( ne Dousset) whose Grandfather was the Mayor and doctor for 40 years and whose summer residence is on Avenue Docteur Dousset.

Unlike ex Senator Rispart’s Lupiac , Aignan will not neglect commerce , which has become almost non existant .In future it will be geared as will the tourism plan to green businesses which try to use bio,organic and sustainable green policies for which they will receive a reduction in taxes. This follows the lead of the enterprising , courageous ( not to mention beautiful) Nancy Kruyer whose bio,organic Broconte/tartine  business in the main square is an example to the whole of France , selling locally produced Bio Wine – Presto and endeavouring to use only organic products in all that she serves – well done Nancy !

Green Tourism will be tackled in another agenda by the Mayor.

The SUN is confidently expected to shine on Aignan Today Sunday not least because of a rumoured visit by the world renowned art collector Charles Saatchi and his famous wife , the cook Nigella Lawson , whose father has a Chateaux near Vic Fezensac. Nigel Lawson was chancellor of the exchequer under Margaret Thatcher but is unfortunately rumoured to be currently under investigation by the French tax authorities for renovating his mansion in France with workmen paid only on the black (with out taxes). Naughty ,naughty Mr Lawson – weren’t you responsible for making sure that English people paid their taxes when you were
Chancellor of the exchequer !
