"This article should lay the foundation for you to come up with some of your own ideas for conserving energy during the summer months.

While conserving energy should always be on the forefront of our mind, its during the extreme temperatures that make this an especially difficult task. In hot climates, the time you can spend outdoors is limited; and these limitations cause us to use more energy. There are many ways to conserve energy and replace it with the natural resources that we have in abundance.

One of the rules I try to adhere to is not to turn on the air conditioner until June 1. In some places, the temperatures can get uncomfortable even before June 1. Some of the things you can do to help alleviate the discomfort is to open windows and doors with screens, use fans to circulate air and dress in light clothing. Wearing light colors and natural fibers will help keep your body cooler without the use of air conditioning.

During summer, the hours that we have the use of daylight are longer. This is helpful in reducing the amount of energy we use in lighting. We should always remember to turn off lights when not in use, but you should also consider doing your activities that require lighting during the day, when there is natural sunlight. Reading a book or catching up on your magazines/mail while sitting by a window to use the sunlight instead of a lamp is one way to do this.

During the summer months, cooking daily meals in the kitchen can be very hot, even with air conditioning. You can cut down on the amount of heat you generate by preparing fresh daytime meals. Breakfast can consist of any kind of fresh fruit accompanied by some crackers with peanut butter and a glass of milk. Lunch can be fresh fruit, cold sandwiches and fresh vegetables... none of which require energy to prepare.

One of the funnest ways my family conserves energy during the summer months is cooking dinner outside. We built a fire ring with large rocks we found on our property and constructed a tripod with a changeable grill/griddle. We create quality family time coming up with different meals to prepare outside, while conserving energy in cooking and lighting.

By taking these easy steps during the summer months, you will not only save money on your energy bill, you will also ensure a brighter future with abundant resources. With a little thought and planning, we can all take measures, in all seasons, to conserve money and energy. And sometimes, you just might create some cherished family memories." (ehow)
