"If you're a hotel manager or owner, saving energy in your establishment should be one of your top concerns. Not only does it help the environment, but it also helps your hotel's bottom line in your energy bills. You can implement a few simple strategies in your hotel to help bring down your overall energy usage.

      Auto Shut-Off Lights

Keep in mind that a hotel guest is not likely to treat his hotel room with the same consideration as he would his own household. His bill is the same regardless of how much electrical energy he uses. Some electrical fixtures and devices you can't monitor, like televisions and charging laptops, but you can install auto-shutoff lights in the bathroom and main room. These lights have sensors to detect when someone enters and moves around a room and turns off when the person leaves. Some lights have timers that start counting down to shutoff as soon as the user switches the light on. This is a simple yet key investment for your hotel if you are seriously interested in energy conservation.

     Limit Heating and Air Conditioning
Some guests like to turn the air conditioner or heat on full blast in their hotel suites even when they're not in the room. Hire a contractor to come in and adjust your heating and air conditioning units to emit only the minimum amount of cold or heat to make the room comfortable for guests. The ideal room temperature is about 78 degrees in the summer and between 68 to 72 degrees in the winter, but make sure you're consistent with any local ordinances. It might also help to place a note in the customer's room specifically asking him to turn off or turn down the unit if he plans to stay out of the room for an extended period of time.

     Gifts to Energy-Conscious Guests
While some guests are motivated by helping the environment, others need some type of incentive to take environmentally friendly actions. So in addition to placing cards in your hotel rooms asking guests to decline linen and towel washing service to conserve water and electricity used by washing machines, reward guests who comply. Give a special gift to each guest who decides not to have her linens turned down during her stay. For instance, you can offer the guest a discount coupon on his next stay or a complimentary breakfast." (ehow)
