The Canal du Midi in the south of France is getting festive. The annual 'Canal du Midi en fête' event kicks off on 26 June for two days of cruises on the Canal du Mid, exhibitions, events and tastings at Béziers and Cers, in the Béziers Méditerranée region.

The weekend of festivities could be the ideal opportunity to discover the Canal du Midi, Béziers and the lovely surrounding area. It's also an ideal diary date for people who are looking for unusual ideas for a holiday - south of France - or a weekend break with a difference.

The weekend of 26-27 June could be the ideal time for anyone interested in short breaks in France to try out a Canal du Midi holiday. This year the annual Canal du Midi festival has a programme that includes:

On Saturday 26 June, on the banks of the Canal du Midi at Cers: An exhibition of photos by P. Calas, excursions by electrically-powered boats, games organised by the local scouts. To create an authentic atmosphere for your summer holidays in France, music will be provided by an accordion orchestra on board the barge “Les Anges d’Eux”.

At the Fonséranes Nine Locks site at Béziers: at 20:30 “A Piano on the Canal” – a magnificent night-time performance of an opera for siren, symphonic fanfare and water-borne piano, with on-board recitals and an introduction to the nautical pianists. Entrance free.

Sunday on the banks of the Canal du Midi at Cers: a display of wheat threshing as it was done in days gone by, planting of an olive tree in honour of Pierre-Paul Riquet, with a poetry reading by the winners of the Valras-Plage 2010 competition, an exhibition of photos by P. Calas, excursions by electrically-powered boats, games organised by the local scouts and, at 23:00, a firework display in honour of Pierre-Paul Riquet.
