June 15, 2010 - PRLog -- On the west coast, homeowners are dealing with colder weather than in past years and the influx of rodents, seeking refuge indoors, has significantly increased. Conversely, homeowners on the east coast are experiencing an unusually warm winter and must contend with an influx of pests seeking food at a time of year when most are dormant.

"Pests are, by nature, opportunistic and resourceful" said Cindy Mannes, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). "The unruly weather across the nation encourages them to be even more so. Homeowners must be vigilant, year-round, in protecting their property and their family's health from the damage and diseases associated with pests. Kansas City Pest control can no longer be viewed as a seasonal issue."

There are several ways homeowners can be proactive in protecting their property and family's health, should such abnormal weather continue NPMA experts offer tips for continued winter pest proofing::

   * Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home including entry points for utilities and pipes.
   * Keep tree branches and shrubbery well trimmed and away from the house.
   * Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
   * Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly.
   * Repair fascia and sofits and rotted roof shingles; some insects are drawn to deteriorating wood.
   * Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around basement foundation and windows.
   * Store fire wood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground.
   * Call a qualified pest professional for additional advice and treatment if necessary
