June 14, 2010 - PRLog -- When an individual experiences cases of ongoing thirst, frequent urination and severe loss of weight the doctor may then check for diabetes to determine what is causing the sudden weight loss and the other symptoms. Also if the extremities, fingers and toes are constantly tingling that is something else the doctor will look at. Physicians will use the plasma glucose test either from fasting blood or casual blood taken after a meal has been eaten. A normal glucose level should be between 70-100 mg/dl and anything over 126mg/dl can be diagnosed as diabetes.

“…Another test done can be the Glucose tolerance test to test how well diabetes is being monitored. There is also a test that is performed mainly on pregnant women, it is the oral glucose tolerance test, where blood is taken at fasting, then a glucose drink is taken and blood is taken an hour or so after that to test for levels. The next test that is used is the HbAIC, the glycated hemoglobin test; this is also used to test how well diabetes is being controlled…”

Other tests that are done are test on the feet and eyes, a dilated exam once a year to make sure there are no signs of retinopathy. The feet are tested for any sores or injuries, because sores on a diabetic do not heal as quickly or as well as they do with people who do not have the disease.

“…There are several supplies on the market today like glucose monitors that are used to test blood by pricking the finger and placing the blood on a lancet and inserting the lancet inside the monitor. There are Site Test Meters that can be used to test on the thumb, thigh, upper arm and forearm. There is also the Laser drawn method where a laser penetrates the skin and test for glucose levels that way. There is the Mini Med device where a small catheter is placed under the skin and glucose is measured over a period of days. Lastly there is a glucose watch which is fairly new this works by a tiny electric current that is sent through the arm and this measures the glucose levels up to three times an hour…”
